I have spent the month of June bathing dogs at Petsmart. I chose this job because I love dogs and love grooming them. My first impressions of the job were rather positive; Petsmart had good policies that I agreed with. I learned about the appropriate safety precautions for myself as an employee as well as for the dogs. I read all the training books and watched all the videos. Although it’s a pretty tedious and repetitive process, I was happy with the training I received and happy with Petsmart as a company.
Then I started working for real.
All those great things I learned from the videos and books?… about 60% of it was actually practiced in the salon. I wasn’t as much bothered by the policies like “staying out of the bite zone” being violated because that was putting the person who was violating the rule in danger, not the dog. If that person gets bit… well, it’s kind of their own fault. The violations that really disappointed me were the ones that had to do with how the dogs were treated, controlled, and contained.
Policy said to clean out the water bowls and kennels after EACH dog. We had a disinfectant spray we were supposed to use. Well, if you were lucky, this was being done once a day. Employees had no problem getting one dog out of a kennel and immediately putting a different dog in there. What if the first dog was sick? No one seemed to care. In my opinion, this is a HUGE violation.
The next thing that really bothered me was how often the groomers would be willing to leave a dog on a table unsupervised. This dog has a loop around it’s neck and it could very quickly turn into a noose!! And I’m not just talking about taking their hands off the dog and stepping 3 feet away. On a few occasions a groomer even left the ROOM asking another groomer or bather who had their OWN dog on their OWN table to keep an eye on their dog. How is it that one person is supposed to safely watch two dogs on two different tables that are not within arms length of each other?! Unbelievable.
Last, and definitely not least, I was appalled at how most of the groomers treated the dogs in general. If a dog was misbehaving or moving too much, the groomers would actually call the dogs names! Their favorite name was “sh!thead”! They would yell at the dogs very loudly and make them even more frightened. Many times I believe the dog just needed a little break. There was one groomer whom I had NEVER witnesses say ANYTHING nice to ANY dog! No “good boy” or “good girl”. I saw many dogs have their arms tweaked in weird positions while trying to get away. If my hands were free, I would come help handle the dog to free it from its torture. Unfortunately, I wasn’t always in a position to do so.
I believe the employees who treated the dogs the best were the bather/brushers. The groomers seemed to be mean ones. I think that’s because no one in thier right mind would be a bather/brusher for Petsmart unless they REALLY loved dogs; the pay isn’t enough for such hard work. I could have made the same tiny hourly wage working at the cash register. Groomers, however, get 50% commission, so they are generally rushing to get as many dogs done in a day as they can.
I would like to be clear that this is what I have to say about this ONE Petsmart location. Other Petsmarts may be following company policies and procedures just perfectly. But I highly recommend NOT taking your dog to the Petsmart in Rohnert Park, CA. If you consider a different location, I recommend observing the groomers for a good while before making your decision. Feel free to ask them for a tour of the back as well and take a good look at the kennels that your dog will be placed in.
Today was my last day at Petsmart because I am moving tomorrow.
This is when you call the coporation and report what you have seen. Where I am at the P&P’s are strictly enforced. As for the whole if you get bit its your fault. Sh*t happens it is not always your fault.
You may have left the company and if you keep your mouth shut about what you have seen you are just as guilty as those doing these things.
Dang Leanna, you should report them to someone. That thing about cleaning out the kennels is no joke, that’s serious business (coming from someone who did that in a veterinary clinic as pretty much his whole job). Actually, so is everything else you mentioned. Those dogs can and (eventually) will choke themselves if they slip off the table. And the kind of stress those dogs are put under can cause serious health problems.
Freakin’ jerks.
Just so you know, just becasue this happened where you were, doesn’t mean it happens everywhere. Did you ever think about telling the manager what you saw, instead of coming on here, badmouthing an entire corporation?
I was a bather for a petsmart for a year and a half, be very careful on what you say to corporation or the caresmart people, because you can get fired if its anything like the store in jacksonville, nc, (0416). i just got fired over some emails that were sent by random people, dont know who did it, dont care really, but its because one girl at work said that i sent them i got fired. a year and a half gone because of what someone else said? my managers/store/corporation had no proof if i did or didnt send these emails.
and as far as cleanliness goes for my petsmart, you are lucky to be able to clean kennels after every dog, especially if your manager over books the salon. most dogs done even get fresh water, so the dog would get the previous dogs slobber and whatever else in the water. my store went for the longest time(1 1/2YR) with a hose that had black mold growing inside of it, and we used that to fill up the water bowls. mmmm. and then theres fleas, if a dog came in infested with fleas, holy cow, grooming would be infested then, funny thing, we would charge customers for flea and tick shampoo, even if we were out, we would use medicated shampoo or tearless shampoo, which only smothers fleas, if your lucky.
found out though that if enough customers do complain about the same problems it does get taken care of really quickly, corporate does gets involved and comes to visit.

I’m also a bather/brusher at PetsMart. I’m on the East Coast though, in VA. Ha. At any rate, I started out as a cashier [I'm a freshman in college, I need spending money] and have been transferred to grooming now. I agree that a lot of those policies aren’t followed. Whenever I have breaks, I clean kennels. Or sometimes the groomers TELL ME to clean kennels, so they don’t have to. I get along fairly well with the groomers and everyone as people, but some of them should not be in the career field that they’re in. My big question though, is what shoes did you wear as a bather? Were you told you could only wear black tennis shoes?
Youuuu should e-mail me back granted you have the time. I have a few more questions if you’re willing to whine and complain with me.
All the best.
Hey, I just read your blog and repsonses. I was a bather at Petsmart for about 7 months before I finally quit. My experience was just as aweful. I can second all of the care the dogs didnt recieve, and the cleanliness problems. My manager would push us to take more dogs than we could handle, claiming “It’s just a beagle” or “Some bathers have only 30 minutes per dog, so you can’t complain.” I would do 8 to 10 dogs a day more often than not, being forced to rush, raising my stress level and therefore the dogs I had to care for. Just as bad for me was the staff.
The people I worked with were horrible. Most of the girls seemed to really hate their job, and were so nasty with a “whatever” attitude. Everyone talked shit about everyone, everyone was two-faced to everyone. They were unenthusiastic and uncaring to customers: one woman even told me that she felt like she was dropping her dog off to a car wash during check in. They all used the excuse “Well, so many women in a small space- what do you expect?” Not an excuse, ever. It is NOT hard to be a decent person.
I can’t tell you how many people would go to Petco and breathe a sigh of relief when they were treated like human beings, and the dogs were treated with love and care.
