Growing Up Online

keyboardI just finished watching Growing Up Online on Frontline and was a bit annoyed by it.  It is about how Myspace and Facebook and the interent have taken over children’s lives and parents just don’t know what to do.   Parents complain that their children lock themselves in their rooms all day and stare at their computer screen.  I don’t know, but one very simple solution to this problem would be: take the computer out of your child’s room or disconnect the interent from their computer!  Why is it that parent’s don’t do this?  I am not a parent yet, but I am a 23 year old female who can relate to these teens.  I was raised in a very strict inviroment and my mother would have taken that computer away from me in a heartbeat.  Granted, I don’t think I’ll be quite as strict a parent my parents were, but I would have no problem taking away a computer.  One junior high student even committed suicide with the help of the internet that was in his room by researching the best way to kill himself.  Why is it that parents complain about what their children do online, yet they don’t moniter it?  I do believe that teens deserve a certain level of privacy, but I don’t think their whole lives should be kept from their parents.  I believe parents have every right to take things away from their children how they see fit.  But aparently I am a minority in my thinking.  I am annoyed that it is so easy for parents to blame anything wrong about their children on the internet, movies, video games, etc… when in reality, it is the parents who are allowing thier children access to these very things.
